Rebar price soars in Germany

The German rebar market saw a huge price increase after the sharp rise in steel prices triggered by the Ukraine-Russia war.

German rebar prices have risen by around EUR 385-465 this month to EUR 1,215-1,315 delivered (12mm diameter, BST 500S grade). The delivery price before the Ukraine-Russia war was 830-850 euros.

Import offers were few as reported last week, around 1100-1200 EUR CPT, mainly from Turkey and Algeria, for May-June shipments. These figures are 300-400 euros higher than the offers from Italy and Spain as reported at the end of February.

Market demand remains strong, but buyers are now cautious due to high prices. Another problem is that the local construction industry is now not only under pressure from steel prices, but also from shortages of other materials caused by the war. According to a local source, “Not only steel is very expensive now, but there are other materials like insulators, which are also important for construction, are in short. For example, there is also a shortage of nails because a lot of them come from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus. Everything is now stopped". So there are a lot of companies, demanding that steel safeguards be lifted, otherwise they won't be able to get enough material.
